Track and trackside safety

Accessing the QR Network Corridor (10m from track centreline)
Before accessing the QR Network corridor you must have the following:
  • An agreement that you are required to perform tasks within the corridor
  • Rail Safety Awareness training
  • Approved Work Method Statement and authorisation from your QR Contact

Note: This does not allow you or your equipment to encroach or access the Danger Zone (3m from the track centreline) at any time.

Accessing the Danger Zone

When it is necessary to enter the Danger Zone to perform a task or access a worksite a number of issues need to be considered. Some of these include but are not limited to:

  • An agreement that you are required to perform tasks in the Danger Zone;
  • Rail Safety Awareness training;
  • Approved Work Method Statement and authorisation from your QR Contact;
  • Work must not commence until protection for the worksite is in place and a Worksite Safety Briefing has been attended;
  • Do not use communications equipment (mobile phone) when walking/working in the Danger Zone;
  • Equipment/materials must not be left unattended in the danger zone;
  • High visibility (Safety Orange) clothing must be worn when in the QR Network corridor and must be reflectorised at night, in tunnels or when visibility is reduced;
  • Do not step between the movable parts of points; and
  • Be aware of rail traffic on adjacent tracks

Note: The stopping distances for trains can be up to 2 kilometres.

Training

Due to the potentially hazardous nature of parts of the QR working environment, contractors must undertake Rail Safety Awareness training before being given access to worksites on the QR Corridor.

The awareness training is designed for environments where work must be conducted within:
  • The QR track fenceline boundaries
  • 10 metres of the track centreline (where boundaries are not readily identifiable)

All contractors should clarify with the relevant QR Contract manager whether or not this training is necessary for their working environment before nominating for the course.

Upon successful completion of this training, contractors are issued with a Trackside Safety Card. This card must be produced to access all relevant work sites. Safety accreditation is current for a period of 12 months or on approval can be extended. After this time reaccreditation is required.

Breaches of QR Network’s safety policy can result in the removal of workers from the QR Network corridor and cancellation of their Trackside Safety Card.

Participants are charged for undertaking this training.

More information is available from QR’s Learning and Development Unit – Phone (07) 3235 7111.
